Sexual Health

What is safer sex?

The Centre for Gender Advocacy (CGA) operates within a sex-positive framework. Healthy sexuality is something to be celebrated. To this end, the CGA organizes workshops on  topics related to sexuality (practices, identities, communication) so that we can all feel more comfortable and engaged in our sexual lives.

Safer sex is all parts of this process – getting to know your body, how to talk about it, how to talk about what you’re comfortable with or not, how to reduce risks when engaging in sexual practices, and how to make sex pleasurable! It also means informing yourself, getting tested, and knowing where to get the resources you need to engage in safer sex.

The CGA provides Safer Sex Kits available free to our membership. The kits include condoms, lubricant, gloves and tips. Each packet details the size and makeup of the materials in them. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Come by and pick them up!

Getting tested! Part of practicing safer sex is getting tested, and being able to talk to you partner(s) about getting tested too. The CGA has lots of information sheets that can direct you to the places most appropriate for you and your needs. There are also a few places around the city where you can get STI and HIV tested for free.

The youth, queer and trans-friendly health clinic at Head & Hands, located in NDG, is one such place. They also provide various contraceptives. You can find out more at Head & Hands.ca.

AIDS Community Care Montreal (ACCM) has a confidential phone line that you can call for more information, specifically related to HIV. Check out their website for more information.

Education Workshops:   If you are an educator, and want to organize Safer Sex, Safer Body Art, HIV 101 workshops – in your classroom, or your community space – ACCM provides this service free through their Education & Prevention program.

The CGA organizes various workshops on sexuality which are hosted at the Centre. Be sure to check for event updates on our website, sign up for our mailing list, like us on facebook, or follow us on twitter to find out when these will take place.
