“Concordia is extremely fortunate to have a Gender Advocacy organization such as the 2110 Centre working with the community. Universities must be more than a bastion of intellectual elitism, they must be engaging critical theory with community practice every day. The 2110 Centre is one of the few bodies that actually does this, and in so many ways, serving and challenging not only students but all of society.”
– Nico Contreras, Former Chairperson of the Concordia Graduate Student’s Association
“The Centre for Gender Advocacy is a unique organization to Montreal and Concordia communities. It combines grassroot movement building for campus-based issues like getting a sexual assault centre and nation-wide issues like reproduction and violence against women, with a safe, judgement-free drop-in centre for individuals who are having trouble finding resources and support for everything from exam stress and depression to struggles with coming out or gender. It is rare to see overlap of service-based and activist-based social justice work and instead of being at odds, it deepens the knowledge and capacity of both. In building a better world we need to both help people with individual struggles and fight for rights on larger political scales. I have learned a ton from working with the centre and deeply value its mandate and work.”
– Courtney Kirkby, Community News Coordinator CKUT 90.3fm and 2110 Board Member
“I’ve been trying to support international students against tuition increases and other difficulties for the last three years – so it’s a huge relief to know that an organization like the 2110 Centre for Gender Advocacy promotes solidarity initiatives with immigrant and international communities. Supporting this fee levy will help us find new ways to promote awareness about international students’ concerns; not to mention the 2110 Centre has actively supported the strike against the current tuition hike. I know that the 2110 Centre will continue, through its diverse services and educational opportunities, to promote healthy perspectives and practices for all students. For justice, for awareness, for safety on our campus, support the 2110 Centre fee levy!”
– Nadia Hausfather, VP-External Elect of the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), GSA Interdisciplinary Councillor, Founding member of Free Education Montreal, PhD Humanities
“The Centre provides a crucial space for all kinds of social justice issues to overlap. Its initiatives constantly push the Montreal community to recognize the links between multiple forms of oppression.”
– Zara Ahmed. MA Student Concordia, English Literature
“The Gender Advocacy 2110 Centre is a great space for social justice groups to meet and get down to business. I’ve seen many diverse groups use the space for workshops and as a workspace. The Occupy Montreal 99% Journal team put together more than 10 issues there. The staff are super friendly and supportive, and the space serves as a safe space for women and LGBTQ folks. Plus, believe it or not, I do feel more conscious of gender issues every time I leave. We need more spaces like this, people!”
– Dan Parker, co-initiator of the 99% Journal and Concordia grad student starting in September
“The 2110 Centre is home to so many diverse and inspiring campaigns that act as avenues for social and political change within the framework of gender empowerment. I personally am so thankful to find likeminded people at the 2110 Centre who are part of the Missing Justice Campaign, a grassroots solidarity collective which organizes to denounce and fight for change around the issue of systemic violence perpetuated against Indigenous women in Canada. As a trained PSA volunteer at the 2110, I have learned so much about peer to peer counseling and its value in society. The 2110 offers a free accessible space to access Peer Support and Advocacy, Trans Advocacy, a binder service, free safer sex materials, a free resource library and a quiet space to do school work. The 2110 has been a supportive ally to the Concordia student body and Montreal community at large. It’s been an amazing place to volunteer, to meet people who are engaged in social and political movements, to feel accepted in a queer and trans positive environment, and seek information on rad resources that exist in Montreal.”
– Candice Cascanette, Concordia Student, First People’s Studies and 2110 Volunteer
“The 2110 is a gathering place like no other in Montreal. It is a safe haven for many people who don’t have other places to look for support. It is a place of action looking to change the realities for some of the most marginalized people in our community. It is a people knowledge site where information is shared and created. The 2110 center is the best!!!”
– Monica Van Schaik Concordia Arts and Science Undergraduate and 2110 Centre volunteer
“I’m really happy that a space like this exists for Concordia students and for the greater Montreal community. I see it as a place that is very open and welcoming. The Centre and staff really want to make sure that a diversity of issues, voices and experiences are included in their activities, which is super important in advocacy/empowerment work. Keep up the great work!”
– Annette Kassaye-MacDonald, Concordia Undergraduate Student and 2110 Centre Sexual Assault Centre Campaign volunteer
