Ways to get Involved with The 2110 Centre for Gender Advocacy

Volunteer Program

Radical Librarianism: The 2110 is a member of the alternativelibraries.org database. We have a lending library that is stocked full of books, magazines, articles, zines, and movies that relate to our mandate. Come keep the library exciting and up-to-date – pick new things to order, read and review the books we already have, keep the shelves stocked! For more information on specific ways to get involved, contact library@centre2110.org.

Campaigns: The 2110 has many campaigns on the go and it’s volunteers that lift them off the ground. We need more people working on outreach and mobilization, and all kinds of tasks and actions which change depending on the campaign. Bring your ideas, come to meetings, make it happen. Also, if you like to make flyers and posters or write call-outs we could always use your help. And of course, once flyers and posters are made we need folks to help us distribute them by tabling, postering, or flyering at events. At present, the 2110’s campaigns include:

  • The Solidarity ID Project, an initiative which empowers people who experience a discrepancy between their state-assigned identity and their personal identity by providing them with ID cards that allow them to self-determine the way they are represented. For more info, email solidarityidproject@gmail.com.
  • Missing Justice, a grassroots collective which works to educate the public on the pandemic and systemic nature of violence against Indigenous women in Canada, and to apply political pressure tactics to shame the government into taking action. For more info, email justiceformissing@gmail.com or check out missingjustice.ca.
  • The Reproductive Autonomy Campaign articulates reproductive freedom as a radical politic based in solidarity with other social justice movements through action, literature, and popular education.
  • Israeli Apartheid Week, entering it’s 6th year, is a week of events helping to build the growing Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement in solidarity with the people of Palestine. This past year it was organized and promoted by the 2110, along with a number of other people and groups. For more info, go to apartheidweek.org.

Programming: Much like the 2110’s campaign roster, programming at the Centre is dynamic and ongoing, from summer film screenings to beginning-of-year art and photo exhibits, and more. A wide range of volunteer-needs come along with planning such events, such as promotion, mobilization, setting up events, and cleaning up afterwards!

>>>For more information on the above listed campaigns, programming, or to discuss a new initiative, email outreach@centre2110.org. To help out with promo, contact promotions@centre2110.org.<<<

Trans Health Network: The THN works to promote health and social justice for Trans people in Quebec. The Network is currently comprised of 4 member organizations: Project 10, The 2110 Centre for Gender Advocacy, ASTTeQ, and Stella. For more info email santetranshealth@gmail.com, or check out www.santetranshealth.net (online as of October 2009).

Resource Centre Development: Get to know different groups around the city, work those advocacy skills of yours, and update our resource centre with us! Our goal is to have a comprehensive understanding and listing of resources and service providers on many topics all of which connect to our mandate: from Trans-positive doctors, to needle exchanges, to cheap or free food, there’s lots out there, and updating our resource centre helps everybody find out about it.

Translation: Although most of the promo and outreach material we distribute is in English, we are aware of the importance of networking with many different language communities in Montreal. If you possess translation skills, please let us know!

Safer Sex kits: Perhaps you have seen these kits kicking around the Centre or at one of our tabling sessions in Concordia’s hall building—we can appreciate that free condoms, lube and gloves are good to come by. If you’re interested in assembling Safer Sex kits and making them more publically available, do get in touch!

Peer Support and Advocacy Program: We are looking for people to contribute to our volunteer-run peer-to-peer support, advocacy and referral program, which runs on the principals of harm reduction and empowerment. This peer based program is comprised of volunteers who have participated in approximately 40 hours of training. Training sessions happen at select times throughout the year. If you would like more information or are interested in becoming involved please contact Devon at psa@centre2110.org.

Other: Stop by and get to know the space – hang out, have a chat, and see what’s going on!

Interested in checking out the Centre, but not sure how you’d like to get involved? You know where we live:
